Tutoring for Dysgraphia in Christchurch for years 0-8

What is Dysgraphia?

Dysgraphia is a learning disability that specifically affects a person’s ability to write. Children with dysgraphia may struggle with handwriting, spelling and expressing their thoughts clearly on paper. They often find it difficult to organise ideas, form letters correctly or write at a pace that keeps up with classroom expectations.

While dysgraphia can make written tasks frustrating, with the right strategies and support, children can improve their writing skills and gain confidence in expressing themselves.

Areas where tutoring for Dysgraphia can help

Dysgraphia can make writing a frustrating and tiring experience for many children. Targeted support can help with challenges such as:

  • Difficulty forming letters correctly and producing uneven or inconsistent handwriting.

  • Illegible writing that’s hard for others and sometimes even the child to read.

  • Inconsistent letter sizing and irregular spacing between words.

  • Fatigue from writing by hand, even for short periods.

  • Spelling errors when writing words. Although, they know how to spell verbally.

  • Irregular or missing punctuation in sentences.

  • Trouble organising thoughts on paper, resulting in slow writing, incomplete sentences or disorganised ideas, even when the child can express them clearly when speaking.

How I can help tutor a child with Dysgraphia

While dysgraphia affects handwriting, spelling and organising thoughts on paper, the Structured Literacy approach can be adapted to support these challenges. By focusing on phonemic awareness, decoding and spelling strategies, I help children build a stronger foundation for writing.

During our initial meeting, we’ll identify your child’s specific needs and explore additional support. Whether that's alternative writing methods, fine motor strategies or assistive tools.

With over five years of experience in Structured Literacy and a strong background in teaching writing and reading, I provide compassionate, targeted support to help children with dysgraphia gain confidence and make meaningful progress.
