Structured Literacy Tutoring in Christchurch for Years 0–8

What is Structured Literacy?

The Structured Literacy approach provides children with the foundational skills needed in phonics, reading and writing. It is especially effective for learners who struggle with literacy or have dyslexia. This method breaks language down into clear, manageable, structured parts like sounds, syllables and spelling rules. It teaches them in a logical, step by step way. Structured Literacy is a highly supportive method, helping children build strong foundations in reading and writing with confidence.

Common areas where extra support can make a big difference

Many learners benefit from extra support with foundational literacy skills. Some of the areas Structured Literacy can help with include:

  • Phonemic Awareness – building confidence in hearing and working with the smallest sounds in spoken words. This includes skills like identifying individual sounds, blending and segmenting them, recognising rhymes and manipulating individual sounds to make new words.

  • Reading and Decoding – developing effective strategies to decode unknown words, expand their vocabulary and the meanings of these words. Build up pace and fluency when reading. Improve their comprehension and inferential skills in a range of different texts and genres.

  • Writing and Spelling – supporting letter formation with handwriting development, accurate spelling and constructing complete sentences with confidence.
