About Fiona Campbell

I am currently teaching junior children and have 23 years of experience as a primary school teacher. In my teaching career, I have always been passionate about teaching reading and writing and have led school literacy programmes within schools. I have also been successful with children’s publications of illustrations or written pieces in the quarterly NZ Toitoi Journal for Young Writers and Artists.

In the last 5 years, I have specialised and trained in the Structured Literacy Approach (reading and writing). I am also Reading Recovery Trained.

I am able to teach all aspects of the NZ Curriculum in the primary school setting. I am able to plan differentiated programmes tailored to meet individual needs.

Other areas I have experience in include:

  • Being a tutor and mentor to beginning teachers.

  • Teaching philosophy for children. This builds on children’s language development through conversations, collaboration and participation. It also helps builds children’s self esteem and develops higher order thinking skills, through a range of activities that integrates across the NZ Curriculum and key competencies. It prepares children to live in the forever changing world we live in.

  • Implementation of digital technologies to aid learning.

I have a passion for teaching children and believe that all children have the potential to make progress given the right tailored tutoring that meets their individual needs and teaching style.

My Approach

I take a personalised, supportive approach to tutoring, tailoring each session to meet your child’s individual needs. Alongside building academic skills, I focus on helping your child grow in confidence and self esteem because feeling capable and valued is just as important as learning the content. My goal is to create a calm, encouraging environment where your child feels safe to take risks, make progress and enjoy learning.

This story has always grounded me of why I am a teacher, showing empathy and passion to all the children I teach or tutor.

“A mother and a daughter were walking along the beach. Lying on the sand were thousands of dying starfish. The little girl ferried them backwards and forwards to the water. The mother said, “Don’t be silly little girl, you won’t make a difference or save any of the starfish.” The little girl said to her mother, “Yes I will, I will make a difference to the starfish I save.”
